Ingredients

  • 1 package Oreo cookies Used for the "dirt" base and topping
  • 4 tablespoons Unsalted butter melted To bind the crushed Oreos into a crust
  • 8 oz Cream cheese softened Make sure it’s softened to avoid lumps
  • ¼ cup Powdered sugar To sweeten the cream cheese mixture
  • 3 cups Cool Whip Divided into layers; use for creaminess
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract For flavor enhancement
  • 2 packages Instant chocolate pudding works best for this recipe
  • 3 cups Cold milk Cold milk helps the pudding set properly
  • 1 pinch Salt A small pinch enhances flavor
  • 1 cup Gummy worms For the fun "dirt" effect
  • 1 cup Crushed Oreos For topping the cake
  • ¼ cup Chocolate chips Optional garnish for added flavor

Equipment

  • 1 9x13 baking dish or trifle bowl
  • 1 Food processor For crushing Oreos into fine crumbs
  • 1 Electric Mixer For mixing the cream cheese layer
  • 3 Mixing bowls One for the pudding, one for the cream cheese layer, and one for the crushed Oreos.
  • 1 Rubber spatula
  • 1 Plastic wrap For covering the cake during chilling

Method

  1. Crush the Oreos into fine crumbs (can use a food processor or rolling pin in a zip-top bag). Reserve 1 cup for topping. Mix remaining crumbs with melted butter. Press into the bottom of a 9x13 dish to form the base layer.
  2. Beat softened cream cheese with powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Gently fold in 2 cups of Cool Whip. Spread this mixture over the Oreo base.
  3. Whisk the instant chocolate pudding mix and cold milk together for 2 minutes until it thickens. Spread over the cream cheese layer.
  4. Spread the remaining Cool Whip on top of the pudding. Sprinkle the reserved Oreo crumbs over the Cool Whip and arrange gummy worms for garnish.
  5. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Let it sit for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight, to allow the layers to set.
